The Buried Giant

Set in medieval England, a mist has robbed people of their most precious memories. Axl and Beatrice, an elderly couple, set out to find their missing son, whom they barely remember. Throughout their journey, they end up remembering some of their lost memories. In The Buried Giant, Ishiguro explores the question of whether everlasting love exists. As one mysterious woman points out to Beatrice, “How will you and your husband prove your love for each other when you can’t remember the past you’ve shared?”

The narrative of this novel is measured, concise, poetic and almost dreamlike. Ishiguro sustains the tension well, and the descriptions are always vivid without losing their pace and dragging on too long. The Buried Giant is a beautiful novel that emphasizes humanity’s flawed and imperfect nature.
