The Things We Lost in the Fire, written by Mariana Enriquez, is an anthology of stories set in modern Argentina.
Darkness is a recurring theme in each of the stories. Utilizing beautiful language, Enriquez depicts Argentina’s history through the lives of her characters. Each character reflects a societal reality that most Argentinians find themselves in–poor, desperate, trapped. Through these characters and their stories, Enriquez illustrates how history can shape a society and how important it is that we are aware of it.
The Things We Lost in the Fire is a vivid and visceral book. Each of the stories reminds us that the ghost of the past will always linger.

This is one I plan to read soon. I just got it from the library. Other reviews I’ve seen have said it’s quite unsettling.

It’s supppose to feel that way. The tones are really dark and really eerie. But that’s the beauty of the book. 😊 Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I’m reading it now and I agree. I’m surprised that though so short, the stories are gripping. I wish some were longer.
