As the saying goes, “You can never go home again”. Phillip Lewis’ debut novel The Barrowfields explores the essence of home and family, and the idea of ones dreams and desires.
The story centers around the lives of a father and son–both named Henry–and how their choices are propelled by their desires to escape from home. As younger Henry recalls the story of his father, we get a glimpse of his upbringing and finds out that younger Henry didn’t fall far from the tree. Both share the love for classic literature and classic music. Both desire to leave the small town of Old Buckram, their home. Both have their own demons to escape from.
Lewis writes with fervor and profundity, creating a story that flows naturally. The Barrowfields is honest, vivid, and rich. A wonderful debut.
